What is Rock ONE?
Rock ONE introduces students to methods used when scrambling on rock terrain. During this activity, we will split into groups and rotate through stations where students will be introduced to techniques and rope skills in preparation for Rock TWO.
The day will begin as a class to set the goals for the day. After all groups have rotated through each station, we will regroup and complete the instruction day. Weather dependent, we will hang out afterwards to assist students further with any of the new skills covered.
All students will need to bring a pack with the items detailed below. Bring an old jacket or a long sleeve shirt to protect your arms during rope skills. Please do not wear your brand new Gortex shell during rope skills.
If rain is in the forecast, consider bringing a large umbrella. A camp chair is also ideal.
Our day will be organized as illustrated below. There are two application stations where you will be physically engaged in climbing or performing rope work. There will be two stations dedicated to demonstrating knot proficiency, recognizing safe anchors and emergency situations. We'll close the day with an activity debrief and discussions to set you up for success at Rock TWO.
Preparing For Rock ONE
Know the knots - this can't be stressed enough. We will be using the Prusik, Klemheist, Water Knot and Double Fisherman during instruction. The better students know these knots, the better we can progress. You don't need to be an expert at tying these knots, but be a good team member and arrive with some prior practice.
Cord and webbing will be provided to prepare your hasty harness.
