SCRAMBLE GEAR

All of the gear shown below are examples of typical brands and models that are worn on scramble activities.  Links for each product will take you to the manufacturers website where you can review the product specifications and suggested retail prices.

The images below meet the general requirements for this course.  Other brands and/or models will perform just as well given the product specifications are similar.  Students are encouraged to equip themselves with gear that is consistent with the specifications of the items below.

The boots shown below are models that will work perfectly for snow and rock and will keep your feet warm(ish) while in the snow for long periods.

Ten Essentials  (Required)

Packing the Ten Essentials whenever you step into the backcountry, even on day trips, is a good habit. True, on a routine trip you may use only a few of them or none at all. It’s when something goes awry that you’ll truly appreciate the value of carrying these items that could be essential to your survival.

The original Ten Essentials list was assembled in the 1930s by The Mountaineers to help people be prepared for emergency situations in the outdoors.  Over the years, the list has evolved to a “systems” approach rather than including individual items.  The exact items from each system that you take can be tailored to the trip you’re taking.

Harness Kit  (Required)

When checking in at the Kick-Off Meeting, all students will be provided webbing, cord and a carabiner to create a  harness.  This harness is intended to provide protection when necessary to travel in a safe manner.  It is considered best practice to carry this kit with you on all scramble activities regardless of the required equipment list.

For this course, students should consider the harness kit as an 11th essential.

Although these items are listed as recommended for this course, trip conditions may cause a trip leader to require certain items for the activity (crampons and snowshoes often fall into this category).
